Prince Edward sweetly referred to his wife, the Duchess of Edinburgh, as his “best friend” when asked a question about their 25-year marriage.
The couple arrived in Nepal on Tuesday [February 4] for a six-day tour of the country, including a visit to the annual Gurkha attestation parade.
During the fourth day of their visit to Nepal, the couple – who have been married since June 1999 – were asked about their good-humoured interactions and about the secret behind their happy relationship.
To which, Edward said: “Because we’re best friends”. Nodding, Duchess Sophie agreed with her husband, saying: “That’s true.”
After being asked whether a good sense of humour was important to a marriage, Sophie added: “Oh, there’s always got to be humour.
“Especially when you’re travelling and you’ve got no idea what’s about to happen. You’ve got to laugh.”
On Friday, the couple made history by becoming the first members of the Royal Family to attend the annual Gurkha attestation parade – which is a landmark moment for young Nepalis joining the British army.
During their visit, Edward and Sophie joined new recruits and their families at the conclusion of the hour-long ceremony.
Speaking at the event, Edward gave an emotional speech to those in attendance. He said: “Always remember you are a soldier in the British army but you are a son of Nepal. Be proud of both.”
In their marriage, the pair have welcomed two children, a daughter and a son. Lady Louise Windsor, now aged 21, was born in November 2003. James, Earl of Wessex, now aged 17, was born in December 2007.
