Prince Edward has shared rare details about his daughter, Lady Louise Windsor and son, James, Earl of Wessex.
The 60-year-old royal spoke about his family – including his wife Duchess Sophie – during a special appearance on Love Your Weekend earlier this year.
The episode, which aired on his 60th birthday on March 10, saw Edward sit down with presenter Alan Titchmarsh.
First speaking about his wife, Edward said: “She’s been an absolutely brilliant rock and I’m incredibly lucky that I found Sophie and that she found me. Hopefully we’ve been a really brilliant partnership.”
Discussing their children, Edward said: “We’re very lucky, we’ve got two, of what we would think are particularly brilliant children, who are forging such different paths for themselves. I think that’s also equally fascinating.”
Speaking of his late father Prince Phillip, who died in 2021, Edward revealed details about his sweet bond with Lady Louise – including how he taught her to drive a carriage.
Edward said: “It was entirely off her own bat. I mean, you know, just one day, ‘Can I go out with you and go sit on the boxes?’. He was like, ‘Absolutely’. He never was going to say no!
“He took her out with the team and I think it was only the second time, he was driving along and he said, ‘Do you want to have a go?’ and she didn’t have time to even answer the question, he just handed the reins across.”
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have been deliberate about keeping their children out of the limelight.
While Louise and James are legally entitled to use the title of His or Her Royal Highness due to their royal status as grandchildren of the late Queen Elizabeth II, Sophie and Edward chose to avoid the royal title following their respective births in 2003 and 2007.
The pair hoped that this would enable them to live a more normal life.
At present, 21-year-old Louise is studying at St Andrews University in Scotland. Her brother attended Eagle House School until 2021, before moving to Radley College.
