pakistan: Pakistan spent $63 million on advertising for a $40 million dam: Report

Pakistan, which is reeling under heavy floods, reportedly spent $63 million to build a dam for $40 million.

According to the Pakistan Parliamentary Affairs Committee (PAC), $40 million was spent from the community for the dam’s construction, but $63 million was spent on advertising, Vice News reported.

The Diamer-Bhasha dam, over the Indus River, is still far from completion.

When completed, the dam will stand 272 metres tall and have a capacity for power generation of 4,500 megawatts.

Former Pakistani Chief Justice Saqib Nisar established a fund in 2018 to fund the construction of a dam, the cost of which had risen to $14 billion by then. People were asked to contribute to the fund, according to Vice News. Imran Khan, Pakistan’s Prime Minister at the time, also assumed joint leadership of the “joint venture.”

The public, the cricket team, top musicians, the army, and government employees all contributed to the ‘joint venture.’

The PAC notified Nisar last month to explain the dam fund that was formed during his tenure.
