The King of Spain appeared overcome with emotion on an historic day for his royal family.
As he watched his elder daughter and heir, Princess Leonor, swear allegiance to the Spanish Constitution, King Felipe VI beamed with pride before appearing to try to contain tears.
The King watched the Princess of Asturias make her solemn oath before Spain’s parliament. Along with his wife, Queen Letizia, he smiled broadly as their first born took her pledge.
Following the promise, the princess was given a very long standing ovation by Spain’s parliamentarians and King Felipe looked overcome by the experience. He frequently placed his hand on his heart and acknowledged the applause before reaching out to his daughter who he then embraced.
Soon afterwards, the royal family headed to a smaller room to sign the book of honour. King Felipe spent several minutes composing a message, pausing more than once as he appeared on the verge of tears. He finally signed the statement, again trying to contain his emotions.
Later, he helped Leonor adjust the medals from the Congress and the Senate presented to her for the occasion.
Princess Leonor swore allegiance to the Constitution of Spain on October 31st 2023, her 18th birthday. From now on, she can reign without a regency and can act as regent for her father if required.
The solemn acts will be followed by a family gathering at her home in Madrid.
