Spain is currently experiencing catastrophic levels of flooding that have not been seen in decades with 158 people dead and dozens more still missing. King Felipe has publicly addressed the loss at a Madrid reception.

On Thursday, King Felipe and Queen Letizia were in Madrid for an event. The King of Spain spoke publicly on the devastation caused by the flooding. He emphasised that the danger has not passed and that the public should continue to follow emergency guidance.

His Majesty also marked the start of three days of mourning to mark the lives of those lost in the flooding.

Valencia in particular was hit incredibly hard by the flooding. Train services between Madrid and Valencia have been suspended for fifteen days, but that could be extended if needed.

Several monarchs have sent their condolences to King Felipe. The Belgian Royal Palace shared that King Philippe reached out to the Spanish Royal Family to express their condolences and to offer support.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands also made a statement, saying: ”Our hearts go out to all those affected by the severe weather in and around Valencia. We share the grief for the victims. In these days full of fear and desperation, we sympathize with the Spanish people, with whom we feel so connected.”
