King Charles’ goddaughter has deleted a video from her website that showed the monarch’s daughter-in-law Meghan Markle being criticised by a Hollywood actress. India Hicks, goddaughter to King Charles III, invited Hollywood actress Brooke Shields onto her podcast to talk about a number of different topics.
On the podcast, Shields recalled a number of her stories, including a time when she interrupted Meghan – a former royal – at the International Women’s Day event in Austin, Texas, in March 2024. Shields told Hicks – who was also a bridesmaid at Charles and Diana’s wedding – that she interrupted the panel discussion with Meghan and Katie Couric to lighten the mood.
The actress said this is because Meghan, 43, had been retelling the story about writing to Procter & Gamble aged 11 to challenge a dish soap advertisement about mothers, with the duchess successfully campaigning for the company to change the wording.
Shields said: “She (Meghan) kept saying she was 11! She wrote to the company, they changed the text, they changed the commercial.
“I go, ‘Excuse me, I’m so sorry. I’ve got to interrupt you there for one minute.’ I said, ‘Well, when I was 11, I was playing a prostitute.’”
The comment was a reference to Shields’ role in the 1978 film Pretty Baby.
Shields told Hicks, whose mother Lady Pamela Mountbatten served as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth II, that she interrupted the duchess because the mood of the event was getting too serious.
Shields said: “It was just too precious. And I was like, they’re (the audience) not going to want to sit here for 45 minutes and listen to anybody be precious or serious.”
The video of Shields, 60, recalling the story to Hicks on the podcast was shared on Hicks’ website, resulting in a lot of criticism. It has now been removed.
One person wrote on X: “She (Shields) is clearly jealous of Meghan.”
Another said: “She’s obviously hostile to Meghan and couldn’t hold it in.”
