King Charles was admitted to hospital on Friday morning for a planned corrective procedure on an enlarged benign prostate.

He is said to be “doing well” following the surgery at the London Clinic in Marylebone – the same hospital where the Princess of Wales is recovering from her abdominal surgery – and has received several visits from his wife Queen Camilla.

The King was expected to stay in hospital for just two nights, however yesterday medics made the decision for him to stay another night.

A source told The Sun: “It is understood that Charles would only stay in hospital for longer than two nights if there was some kind of unexpected issue. The extra stay is entirely precautionary but has nevertheless reportedly caused some unease.”

But while the news has sparked concern among some circles, I think the extra night will prove to be a blessing in disguise.

By being admitted on the last day of the working week, he was ensuring that his recovery days were over the weekend, meaning he would be free to go home ready to get stuck back into his duties come Monday.

However the extra night in hospital has brought an end to that – and will give him another day of much-needed bedrest.

It will also serve as a reminder to the King that the procedure for an enlarged prostate is no mean feat and he must take it easy.

Medical experts typically advise recuperating for up to two weeks at home following the surgery. Such post-operative care is standard practice to ensure a full and uncomplicated recovery.
