King Charles visits cancer centre during return to public engagements – Royal Central

In a poignant return to public engagements following an extended period away receiving cancer treatment, King Charles paid a visit on Tuesday to the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre.

Accompanied by Queen Camilla, the King toured the facilities and learned how technicians are working to detect cancer earlier. The royal couple also met with a group of cancer patients undergoing treatment.

Through it all, the King reassured those who asked that he was feeling better. “I’m alright thank you very much, not too bad,” he was overheard telling multiple people.

The King also revealed that his cancer diagnosis came as a bit of a shock, telling one patient: “It’s always a bit of a shock, isn’t it, when they tell you?”

Upon being shown a CT scanner that has helped diagnose 250 patients early over the past two years, the King said that early detection is a must, “the trouble is to get enough people early. There’s so much positive news.”

It was further announced that King Charles has become the new Patron of Cancer Research UK, succeeding in the role from the late Queen Elizabeth II. With this new appointment, the King met with the organisation’s Chief Clinician.

In a blog post on the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre’s website, its chief executive, David Probert said: “We are touched by this visit from Their Majesties and their concern and interest in the experience of our patients and staff.

“The development of innovative treatment combined with compassionate care is at the heart of what we do at our cancer centre. Huge thanks to our skilled and dedicated teams who consistently strive to provide the very best care possible for our patients.”

Buckingham Palace announced last week that King Charles will start resuming public engagements following cancer treatment and recuperation. The palace said: “As the first anniversary of The Coronation approaches, Their Majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year.”
