King Charles urged to make rare move putting Trump in ‘really difficult position’ | Royal | News

King Charles has been urged to make one rare move, just weeks after the monarch invited US President Donald Trump to the UK for a second, unprecedented, state visit. As King of Canada, Charles, 76, is being urged to attend the country’s State Opening of Parliament. This, it is argued, would clearly display the monarch’s support for the country against US President Donald Trump’s trade wars.

Former Conservative MP Andrew Percy, who is based in Vancouver, acknowledged the King attending Canada’s State Opening of Parliament could make it a “difficult” display for Mr Trump. He told the Daily Mail: “It would put Trump in a really difficult position. He is going to accept a state visit with the King while at the same time threatening and showing disdain and disrespect for Canada – where [Charles] is the monarch.”

This comes after the King has been praised by Canadians for what has been perceived as subtle show of support in light of the US President’s attacks on their country – which has included discussions of annexation as well as a fully-fledged trade war.

In recent days, the King wore his Canadian medals while on board HMS Prince of Wales. Moreover, he presented his Canadian personal attendant with a new ceremonial sword at Buckingham Palace.

The State Opening of Parliament in Canada would take place after the country’s federal elections.

While the government, currently led by former Bank of England head Mark Carney, has until October to call the election, the vote is widely expected to take place in the spring.

If the King decided to attend the State Opening of Parliament in Canada, he would follow in his late grandfather and mother’s footsteps.

Queen Elizabeth II attended the event in 1957, while King George VI headed to the Canadian Parliament during a royal tour in 1939.
