King Charles takes on patronage that links him to monarchs over 200 years

In 2022, it was announced that Buckingham Palace was doing a full review of all royal patronages. With the passing of the late Queen Elizabeth II, nearly 500 charities and organisations lost their patron. The review of all royal patronages has finally concluded; some organisations have lost their royal patrons but the majority retain royal support.

It has been announced that King Charles will be Patron for the The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. This is a particularly important patronage as the role has been held by every reigning monarch since King William IV accepted the honour in 1834.

The club itself dates back to the mid-eighteenth century when it was founded as the Society of St Andrews Golfers in 1754. Although it was created as a local golf club, it quickly gained status and King William stated that it was the “home of golf”. It is now a members-only club with nearly 2,500 members from around the world.

The King also accepted other new patronages, including the Royal Ballet and the Royal British Legion. He (and other members of the Royal Family) have also retained many of their existing patronages.
