King Charles has marked the second anniversary of his mother’s death at Crathie Kirk near the late monarch’s beloved Balmoral estate.

The monarch, 75, and his wife Queen Camilla were driven up to the church for Sunday service this afternoon.

The King donned a charcoal grey suit, teamed with a black and burgundy tie, while Queen Camilla, 77, wore a red and green tartan ensemble, complete with a matching hat.

While it has been a rather turbulent year for the Royal Family, with two cancer diagnoses and a continued “Sussex problem” across the pond, King Charles has soldiered on to keep his rather “slimmed down” monarchy strong.

According to a source, the monarch’s health is finally heading in an “extremely positive” direction and he’s said to be coming to terms with a life as King.

The source told the Sunday Express today that the sovereign “misses his mummy terribly” and is keen to mark her passing with a trip to Crathie Kirk on the Balmoral estate for private reflection and prayers. No other formal remembrance plans are in place for the day – as per convention.

“It’s been a tough two years,” said the source. “But His Majesty is finally through the woods and can see a way forward.

“His health is improving and all the signs are extremely positive for a strong and healthy future.

“He misses his mummy terribly, so it’s important for him to mark the day she passed with some quiet reflection and prayers in church.

“Charles’s faith remains strong and it is what has really helped guide him through the past two years, especially the last nine months.”

King Charles endured a difficult second year as sovereign with both him and the Princess of Wales, 42, undergoing treatment for undisclosed types of cancer.

Despite the setbacks, both His Majesty and Princess Kate are determined not to be beaten by the disease and have made public appearances while undergoing gruelling chemotherapy.

Queen Camilla gave an insight into the King’s treatment this week when she opened a new cancer centre in Bath, revealing he was “doing very well”.

King Charles will crank up a gear yet again next month as he will be joined by the Queen for an important tour of Australia and Samoa – their first major overseas trip this year.
