King Charles sported a tartan kilt and sporran as he made an appearance at Duthie Park, Aberdeen, today to open the annual Summer Flower Show.

The visit is His Majesty’s first since becoming the Royal Horticultural Society Aberdeen (RHSA) patron. The patronage was previously held by Queen Elizabeth II and King George VI.

Marking the 200th anniversary of the flower show, King Charles, accompanied by Brian Grant, Chairman of the RHSA, met exhibitors and RHSA members, and viewed floral displays, including vegetables entered in the National Vegetable Society Scottish Group vegetable competition.

His Majesty had the opportunity to meet young RHSA participants and those who tend to Duthie Park. The King also spoke to members of the public, who had turned out to attend the show.

The Royal Horticultural Society of Aberdeen was founded in 1824 by four men who called a public meeting to form the Society.

For the past 200 years it has remained a voluntary organisation aiming to “advance knowledge and encourage the practice of horticulture in the community”.

King Charles and Queen Camilla are currently holidaying on the Balmoral estate in the Scottish Highlands.

Their Majesties have retreated to Birkhall, their own residence on the estate, only venturing to the main house for entertaining or to see other royals who are staying there.

Sir Keir Starmer and his wife Lady Victoria Starmer are expected to visit Balmoral to stay with King Charles and Queen Camilla this weekend.

It is tradition for the serving Prime Minister and his or her partner to be invited to join the monarch at Balmoral towards the end of the summer months just before Parliament is back in session. The House returns on September 2 this year.

“The prime minister and his wife received their invitation earlier this month and they accepted,” said the source.

According to the source, the Prime Minister and his wife will be offered accommodation in the main castle while Their Majesties will reside in their private cottage.
