King Charles makes an appearance at the Mey Highland Games in Scotland | Royal | News

King Charles made an appearance at the Mey Highland Games in Scotland on Saturday, August 3.

The monarch, 75, braved the rain to attend the event held in the village of John O’Groats in the far north of Scotland after arriving in the Highlands earlier this week.

Charles, who is chieftain of the games, wore a traditional kilt with a smart jacket, buttoned up waistcoat and tie, and woollen socks pulled up just below the knees.

Upon his arrival, His Majesty appeared relaxed and took time to wave and shake hands with members of the public.

Once seated in the front row of the marquee, the monarch settled in to watch the spectacle – which included a traditional caber toss and a tug of war – with a whiff of some local whisky.

King Charles seemed to be in high spirits as he watched traditional Highland games events such as the three-legged and egg and spoon races as well as presenting a trophy to the winning tug of war team at the end.

The first Mey Games was held in the nearby village of Mey in 1970 to celebrate the late Queen Mother’s 70th birthday.

As guest of honour on the day, she declared the event a success and encouraged its organisers to make it an annual event.

Express.co.uk exclusively revealed earlier this week that King Charles arrived at his favourite Scottish residence on Monday evening.

The King opted to spend time alone at the Castle of Mey before he joins the rest of the Royal Family on the Balmoral estate next week.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will be joined by other members of the Royal Family for their annual Balmoral summer holiday in mid-late August.
