King Charles is said to be “likely relieved” after Donald Trump said that he would leave Prince Harry alone regarding his visa, a royal expert has claimed.
The Duke of Sussex has been embroiled in a row regarding his visa arrangements after his claims about past drug use in his memoir Spare led to a think tank demanding his immigration records be made public to confirm whether or not he lied in his application.
Harry has lived in the US since 2020, when he and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior working royals.
In his memoir, released in January 2023, the duke wrote that he had taken cocaine, cannabis and magic mushrooms, adding that psychedelic drugs allowed him to see “the truth”.
His claims Harry sparked a row with the Heritage Foundation, a conservative Washington DC think tank, which demanded the US Government release Harry’s immigration records.
Under US law, while not constituting an automatic ban, drug use can be grounds to reject a visa application.
Earlier this month, the US President brushed off claims regarding deporting the duke.
He told the New York Post that he won’t kick Harry out of the US if he is found to be lying: “I don’t want to do that. I’ll leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible.”
Meanwhile, US judge Carl J. Nichols has ordered the US government to declare which specific legal documents related to the Duke’s visa can be released by Thursday, February 20. He will then determine which papers can unsealed and given to the Heritage Foundation.
But a royal expert has now claimed that Harry’s father, King Charles, is “likely relieved” after Mr Trump’s comments, as Harry would likely appeal any decision made against him, and if he were to be deported, he would have to move back to Britain.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Fox News: “It would put the spotlight back [on] the Sussexes.
“Harry would undoubtedly appeal. The publicity would be ceaseless.
“Apart from the fact that the Royal Family is the UK Government’s Trump card in dealing with the most unpredictable president of them all, Harry is in self-imposed exile and the Royal Family have health struggles and do not trust the Sussexes.”
Mr Fitzwilliams added that Harry and Meghan won’t be welcomed back to the UK and noted on their plummeting popularity among the country’s population, apart from the youngsters.
