On the morning of Saturday, 6th May, King Charles will be joined by Queen Camilla as they make their way from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey for the Coronation.
They will travel to the Abbey in The King’s Procession.
Their Majesties are set to travel in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach created for Queen Elizabeth II to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee in 2012. In its decade-long history, the coach has only ever conveyed the Sovereign, occasionally accompanied by the consort, or visiting Head of State.
Many eyes might be drawn to the gilded crown on the top of the coach which is carved from oak from HMS Victory. Inside, the coach’s interior are metals, wood, and materials from some of the most famous royal residences in the country including Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, the Palace of Holyrood House in Edinburgh, and Windsor Castle.
Materials from the historic ship, the Mary Rose, is also included as are materials from St Paul’s Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey, which on this occasion, is extra special as that is where Their Majesties will be headed to be crowned. Six Windsor Greys will draw the carriage carrying the King and Queen from the palace to The Abbey for their ceremony.
The King’s Procession, accompanied by The Sovereign’s Escort of the Household Cavalry will leave Buckingham Palace through the Centre Gate. Making its way down the mall, the coach will pass through the Admiralty Arch and the south of King Charles I Island. It will continue its way down Whitehall and along Parliament Street before traveling around the east and south sides of Parliament Square to the Broad Sanctuary. Their Majesties will then arrive at the Sanctuary of Westminster Abbey.
The Coronation Service is scheduled to begin at 11 o’clock and it is likely it will last several hours. The Coronation of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II lasted nearly three hours.
