When you’re starting out in any relationship then the stakes are high, each person wants to show the very best version of themselves – and it’s often the case that all the stops are pulled out to impress.
Perhaps what some aren’t expecting is a trip to a campsite, such was the case with Prince Harry and his now wife Meghan when their relationship was blooming.
But fear not – it was a tent of the very poshest kind – at campsite Meno a Kwena in Botswana, Africa.
This secret hideaway sits in front of a stunning backdrop of the African bush, overlooking the sparkling Boteti River, and costs a cool £1,500 a night per couple.
On Meghan’s first-ever wildlife safari for her 36th birthday, the couple watched the sun set behind a spectacular vista.
Natural Selection is a website that offers safaris to the location, and it explains more about the gorgeous destination.
It said: “The safari never stops at Meno a Kwena, a hidden gem of a camp perched on a rocky clifftop above the Boteti River in Botswana.
“With a glittering roster of activities, including day trips to the Makgadikgadi Pans, guided walks with the San bushmen, and wildlife-watching boat trips, there’s plenty to get your teeth into.
“But sometimes, the best game viewing is where you least expect it, and at Meno, it’s right in front of you.”
It adds: “From their lofty position, the ten tents look down on a menagerie of animals at the water below, from herds of majestic elephant, to dazzles of nomadic zebra – all you need to do is sit back and take it all in.”
In Finding Freedom – a book about the couple by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand – more was revealed about the pair’s stay there back in 2017.
The book says: “A friend said ‘She came back smiling and just completely spellbound.’
“Her phone was full of photos – the nature they had seen, candid snaps of herself, and selfies with Harry.
“According to the friend, if Meghan didn’t have to return to Canada for work and Harry to his life in London, ‘they would have happily spent the entire summer there together’.
“Meghan said that she and Harry talked so much, about things she rarely shared with anyone.
“‘I’ve never felt that safe,’ Meghan told her friend, ‘that close to someone in such a short amount of time.'”
The world for the Sussexes is very different now after the couple stepped down from Royal Family duties in 2020 to raise their children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, in Montecito, California.
