How the Guardian covered 2023, with Kath Viner

Katharine Viner, the Guardian and Observer’s editor-in-chief, tells Nosheen Iqbal about what the news cycle of 2023 looked like from her desk. “We are getting used to an extremely intense pace of news these days,” Viner says.

She discusses how the Guardian has focused on humanising the horror of the Israel-Gaza war, the deaths of journalists in the region, and the challenges of reporting on the conflict.

“It’s very frustrating for journalists that they can’t get into Gaza,” she says. “We would rather the Guardian made the decision about whether to send reporters in or not, rather than the IDF banning people from going in.”

Viner also talks about the Cotton Capital project, which interrogated the links between the Guardian’s founders and transatlantic slavery, and the series of reparative justice measures that have been introduced this year.
