This week marks the 120th birthday of Christian Dior, the designer who changed the trajectory of post-war fashion. From The New Look’s first appearance in 1947, the House of Dior has been a royal favourite.
A young Princess Margaret first explored Dior’s fashion on a 1949 visit to Paris where she fell in love with the designer’s work. The stylish Princess was so enamoured with his designs that she chose him to design her 21st birthday gown in 1951.
Margaret is the not the only member of the Royal Family to appreciate the House of Dior, though.
The late Diana, Princess of Wales wore a stunning midnight blue satin evening gown created by John Galliano, then Creative Director of Dior, for the 1996 Met Gala. The iconic Lady Dior handbag is also a lasting testament to Diana, both created and named in her honour.
Queen Camilla has also turned to Dior in recent years. In September 2023, The Queen wore a Dior evening gown complete with a sweeping floor-length cape in navy blue for a State Dinner at Versailles.
Her Dior looks are not limited to diplomatic dressing, though. Queen Camilla also wore a turquoise day dress from Dior during Royal Ascot in 2024. And at Wimbledon in 2024, Camilla even carried a beige Lady Dior, further cementing her love of the classic French house.
