Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette Marit of Norway have stepped in to host an important annual event on the Norwegian royal calendar.

The Crown Prince and Crown Princess hosted a formal reception for diplomats on Thursday, an annual tradition for the Norwegian Royal Family. The reception is held for diplomats who have embassies in Norway.

The location can vary, as it is on a rotating three year schedule. For the first year, the Diplomats’ Dinner is held at the Royal Palace in Oslo, and for the second and third years, the event is either hosted at Oscarshall or on the Royal Yacht.

This year’s event was held at Oscarshall, a smaller palace that was originally built in the 1850s. King Oscar I commissioned the maison de plaisance (or private home) in the mid-nineteenth century but it was sold to the Norwegian state in 1863. The Norwegian Royal Family now use the former home for events.

Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette Marit looked to be enjoying themselves as they chatted with different diplomats.

The Crown Princess chose to diplomatically dress with a striking red tweed ensemble, echoing the colours of the Norwegian flag. The structured top featured a peplum waist that was accented with the tulip-style skirt.
