Joker: Folie À Deux, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 hit Joker, just received an official release date. The follow-up film is set to release on Oct. 4th, 2024, exactly five years after the original film, according to reports from Deadline. The initial Joker movie was released in the same month in 2019 and broke October’s domestic opening record with $96.2 million, eventually raking in over $1 billion worldwide.
It’s no surprise that DC and Warner Bros. would stick to the same game-plan as the predecessor, hoping to replicate the first film’s success. The movie was nominated for 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, and snagged two Academy Awards, including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role with Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Score. The Deadline report says production is on track to start in December, with Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Philips returning to helm the film.
Phoenix previously teased the film in a very cryptic way with The Playlist saying, ‘I mean, I dunno. From when we were shooting, we started to — you know, uhh, this is an interesting guy. There are some things we could do with this guy and could [explore] further. But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know.’
The direction that Joker: Folie À Deux is headed is currently unknown, however, there are certainly a lot of exciting ways to spin the character for a sequel.
Todd Philips Says a Joker Sequel Would Need a Strong Thematic Resonance
Joker was a heavy film filled with dark moments and sequences that allowed audiences a chance to contemplate certain aspects of life. Todd Phillips wants fans to have the same thoughts when Joker 2 releases in theaters in 2024. During a 2020 interview with CB, the filmmaker shared the elements in the movie most vital to him and the themes he would want to carry over into a sequel.
“We’re open, I mean I’d love to work with him on anything, quite frankly. So who knows? But it would have to have a real thematic resonance the way this one did, ultimately being about childhood trauma and the lack of love, and the loss of empathy. All those things are really what made this movie work for us, so we’d have to have something that had an equal thematic resonance.
The title, Joker: Folie À Deux, is a French reference for a medical term pertaining to a mental disorder that affects two people, leading many to believe the sequel may also focus on Harley Quinn. Additionally, rumors began circulating of Lady Gaga joining the cast, and the entirety of the film being a musical, although nothing is confirmed as of now. Audiences will know more as information begins to release regarding the anticipated sequel. However, fans have over a two-year wait until Joker: Folie À Deux releases in theaters on Oct. 4th, 2024.
