The Princess Royal has shared her regrets at missing an important event in her first statement since leaving hospital this week.
Canadian Governor General Mary Simon has shared a statement from The Princess Royal after she was forced to miss a visit to Canada where she was meant to attend a memorial service in Newfoundland in honour of the centenary of the Newfoundland National War Memorial.
The message reads, ”It is with deep regret that I am unable to be with you today, as you commemorate the brave efforts and sacrifices of the members of the Newfoundland Regiment who went into battle on the first day of the Somme.
I have fond memories of joining you in 2016, on the 99th occasion that the people of this Island commemorated the Battle of Beaumont Hamel, and I am deeply saddened that I’m unable to join you again, and I send you my warmest best wishes on this special day of commemoration.”
On Sunday, 23 June, Princess Anne was injured while out walking on her estate, Gatcombe Park. It is thought she may have been injured by a horse. She was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol where she was treated for minor head injuries and concussion.
The Princess Royal was visited by her husband, Sir Tim Laurence, and her daughter, Zara Tindall, before she was released from hospital on Friday, 28 June.
