The Royal Watcher - Prince Ricardo De La Cerda
The Royal Family announced the Engagement of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones at Royal Lodge in Windsor on this day in 1960, 65 years ago, which was called the ‘best kept secret in Britain’.
Princess Margaret, the daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, announced her engagement to Antony Armstrong-Jones from Royal Lodge in Windsor.
The couple had gotten engaged while visiting Wildcome Manor shortly after Antony Armstrong-Jones was invited to stay at Balmoral Castle in the Summer of 1959, but the announcement had to wait until the birth of Prince Andrew, so was called the ‘best kept secret in Britain’.
Armstrong-Jones presented the Princess with an engagement ring set with a ruby surrounded by a marguerite of diamonds, which he had designed the ring after a rose in honour of Princess Margaret’s middle name.
The couple got married in Westminster Abbey that May, and had two children before divorcing in 1978. Princess Margaret passed away in 2002, while the Earl of Snowdon died in 2017.
