The Spanish Royal Family celebrated the Engagement of Infanta Elena of Spain and Don Jaime de Marichalar at the Palacio de la Zarzuela outside Madrid on this day in 1994, 30 years ago.
Infanta Elena of Spain, the elder daughter of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain, and Don Jaime de Marichalar, fourth son of the Count and Countess of Ripalda, celebrated their Engagement at the Palacio de la Zarzuela, three days after the Official Announcement.
Infanta Elena and Don Jaime were joined by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, the Countess of Ripalda, the Prince of Asturias, Infanta Cristina, and the Countess of Barcelona.
Infanta Elena revealed her Engagement Ring, which was made from the central element of the Marichalar Tiara, while she presented the groom with a watch.
In November 1994, the engagement of Infanta Elena to Don Jaime de Marichalar, fourth son of the Count and Countess of Ripalda, was announced. On that occasion, a delighted Elena showed to the press, which were present at the official announcement ceremony, her engagement ring, a simple piece, made of diamonds set in platinum, representing a teardrop. This teardrop is nothing less than the central element of an heirloom tiara that the Marichalar family presented to the Infanta on this special event.
Infanta Elena of Spain and Don Jaime de Marichalar got married at Seville Cathedral in March 1995.
