The heir to the Danish throne, Crown Prince Christian, has issued a major announcement today.

King Frederik and Queen Mary’s eldest son took to the Danish royal family’s official Instagram account to give a life update and announce a new role he’ll be assigned to at the beginning of the year.

The 19-year-old embarked on a three-month trip to East Africa and said it was an experience he will “never forget” but added that he’s looking forward to coming back home for the holidays.

Prince Harry’s love for Africa is well known, as the duke has travelled to the continent many times in the past and he recently did again to promote Sentebale, a charity he co-founded in 2006.

During a panel discussion earlier this year, the duke said: “Africa’s in my heart, and Africa’s in my soul.

“I first went there when I was 12, 13 years old, and after so many years, I wanted to give back to it because it had given me so much.

“The vast open space, the cultures, the community, the people, the wildlife, just the freedom was a huge piece of why I loved Africa so much.”

Meanwhile, Denmark’s crown prince gave an insight into his life over the past three months and said he learned about nature conservation, worked with wildlife, built new houses and also played football with the locals.

He also announced he will be joining the military in February as an officer for the Guardhouse regiment in Slagelse after following his father’s footsteps, who also served in the military.

Christian’s message read: “For almost three months I have been in East Africa. The everyday life down here is completely different from back home [Denmark]. The food, the culture, the climate, the wildlife, the tasks and the people made it an experience I will never forget.

“In recent weeks I have been working with nature conservation. I helped monitor and register animals in the bush and looked after the office on the farm.”

He added: “I have learned a lot about life down here. I have helped build new houses for the employees, and then I have played some good football matches with the locals.

“But now I am also starting to look forward to returning home to my family in Denmark and celebrating Christmas in a few weeks. And then I look forward to new challenges! In February, I will start as a military officer at the Guard Hussar Regiment in Slagelse.”
