King Felipe of Spain appeared to be enjoying himself while he was in Girona for the 50th anniversary celebrations of the opening of the Dali Museum.
The Dalí Museum opened in 1974 and was the artist’s last great project. Dalí himself planned the theatre-museum that was built on top of the remains of the old Municipal Theatre of Figueres in Girona. It is a unique museum, as it takes visitors through the artist’s life- includes the different phases of his art, including impressionism, cubism, surrealism- as he intended.
King Felipe was given a tour of the museum and was able to see several of the exhibitions that have been launched to mark the 50th anniversary. In addition to a classical performance by the Quartet Casals, he also saw a video, “Dalí Theatre-Museum. A brief but clear history of art.”
When confronted with one of the artist’s iconic self-portraits with an over-exaggerated moustache, the Spanish king had to laugh.
King Felipe also took time to greet the waiting crowds outside and to chat with people after he had toured the museum.
Salvadore Dalí was a Spanish Surrealist painter and is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. Notably, Dalí is also buried in a crypt at the Dalí Theatre-Museum.
