Crown Prince Pavlos has been nominated by King Charles III to accept the Athenagoras Human Rights Award on behalf of The Prince’s Trust.

The Prince’s Trust is receiving the Athenagoras Human Rights Award because of The King’s understanding of the edict “love your neighbour as yourself,” according to Dr. Dr. Anthony J. Limberakis, a national commander behind the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate which administers the award.

“And in the Prince’s Trust, he has brilliantly demonstrated the meaning and importance of that divine command. The Trust thus richly deserves to receive the Athenagoras Human Rights Award.”

Crown Prince Pavlos has served with the Prince’s Trust International since its inception in 2015, first serving as the Chair of the Global Advisory Board. In 2022, following King Charles’s accession, he took on a more significant role within the charity and currently serves as the international branch’s Vice President.

According to the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the entity behind the Athenagoras Human Rights Award, Crown Prince Pavlos “was…instrumental in establishing, piloting and growing Prince’s Trust International programs in Greece, where he opened doors, helped with fundraising and was on hand to offer advice as needed.”

King Charles III said in a statement that “I am particularly delighted that His Royal Highness Crown Prince Pavlos, Vice President of Prince’s Trust International, has agreed to receive the Athenagoras Human Rights Award.”

The Athenagoras Human Rights Award is presented annually to a person or organisation “that has consistently exemplified by action, purpose and dedication, concern for the basic rights and religious freedoms of all people,” according to its press release.

It was established in 1986 by the National Council of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in America and is named after Athenagoras I, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.

Past recipients of the Athenagoras Human Rights Award include Presidents Biden, Carter, Bush Sr., Mikhail Gorbachev, Elie Wiesel, Mother Theresa, First Lady Barbara Bush, and the scientists who developed the coronavirus vaccinations.

Crown Prince Pavlos will accept the Athenagoras Human Rights Award at a banquet in New York City on 21 October at the New York Hilton Hotel. He will be accompanied by Will Straw, who serves as the Chief Executive of the Prince’s Trust International.
