Batgirl Star Ivory Aquino Thanks Fans for Support After Movie’s Cancelation

Ivory Aquino played Barbara Gordon’s best friend Alysia Yeoh in the film which will apparently never be released.

The surprise news that Batgirl wouldn’t be getting a release is still shocking for those involved, as the film had already been shot and was deep into post-production. If released, the film would have featured Ivory Aquino as Alysia Yeoh, best friend to Leslie Grace’s Barbara Gordon. It would have marked the first time an openly trans character was featured in a live-action DC movie.

Fans will never get the chance to see what would have been a history-making performance from Aquino, as the reported plan for Batgirl is for the movie to be shelved without a theatrical or streaming release. It’s obviously disappointing for the cast and crew, but in a new Instagram post, Aquino remains grateful for the experience she had working with everyone on the unreleased feature film. Aquino also gives her thanks to everyone offering support during this unfortunate time.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Thank you for the outpouring of love Batgirl fam our time in Glasgow was filled with lotsa laughter, joy, love, passion & dedication from the amazing crew & close-knit cast. Batgirl was truly a labor of love we were excited & eager to share with you all who’ve championed this inspiring character & our fam of nontraditional underrepresented peeps having the opportunity to share with the world that ANYONE & EVERYONE can be a superhero. A female-written female-produced film starring an Afro-Latina (angel!) & directed by Muslim Moroccan-Belgian wunderkinds (with a female assistant director) about a female character (as imagined by a female comic book writer) who forges her own path to uplift the lives of those around her including her trans best friend, deserves to be seen & will find a way. There is no price tag on that.”

Aquino also shared some images from the set, revealing a peek at her character along with some photos with her fellow cast and crew. The actress says that these images still bring her joy and that she hopes fans will still appreciate seeing them as well, perhaps by imagining what could have been. Leslie Grace Thanked the Fans

Leslie Grace, who would have presumably shared a lot of screen time with Ivory Aquino with their characters playing best friends, also spoke out about the situation on Instagram. Grace similarly said how much she appreciates the love and support from the fans as well as the experience she had working with such a wonderful cast and crew on the ill-fated movie.

“Querida familia! On the heels of the recent news about our movie “Batgirl,” I am proud of the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over 7 months in Scotland. I feel blessed to have worked among absolute greats and forged relationships for a lifetime in the process! To every Batgirl fan – THANK YOU for the love and belief, allowing me to take on the cape and become, as Babs said best, ‘my own damn hero!’ #Batgirl for life!”
