Armsby Abbey to join worldwide celebration of Zwanze

At precisely 3 p.m. Saturday — 9 p.m. Central European Time — Armsby Abbey joins a select group of 84 bars, breweries and restaurants from 21 different countries in placing one of the rarest beers on the planet on tap. Spend enough time absorbing bits of the history behind craft beer’s most influential people and places, and you’ll likely learn about “Zwanze,” the legendary beer that inspired its own international holiday, celebrated annually with a simultaneous worldwide tapping of the year’s batch.

At one time, Zwanze drew a level of fanfare akin to new gadgets and popular concert tickets, creating a black market for rare bottles, typically priced well over face value. But while hype alone may have spurred Zwanze’s legend, it owes its longevity and devoted community to one man and one brewery.
