Prince Ricardo De La Cerda
The Dutch Royal Family has one of the strongest jewellery collections in Europe, with several versatile pieces to choose. Queen Maxima has even used multiple tiaras to create a new diadem, one that has quickly become a family favourite.
Queen Maxima’s Star Tiara uses elements from two nineteenth century diamond tiaras in the family collection. On her wedding day on 2 February 2002, Maxima wore what is now known as the Dutch Star Tiara.
The tiara uses the base from the Pearl Button Tiara, a base that was originally the foundation of one of the tiaras belonging to Queen Sophie of the Netherlands who was consort in the mid 19th century..
While the Pearl Button Tiara was a favourite for Queen Juliana, Queen Beatrix and other members of the family, Maxima did not wear the pearl elements for her wedding day.
Instead of the pearl buttons, Maxima wore the tiara set with five diamond stars. The ten-pointed stars originally belonged to Queen Emma who was the last woman to be consort of the Netherlands before Maxima.
Queen Maxima is not the only family member to wear this new tiara. Princess Catharina-Amalia, the Princess of Orange, has also worn the piece.
Princess Amalia wore the Dutch Star Tiara in December 2024 when she joined her parents at a Portuguese State Dinner.
Perhaps it is time for Queen Maxima’s other daughters, Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane, to take their turn with this sparkler!
