Prince Ricardo De La Cerda
Princess Isabella’s birthday celebrations continued on Tuesday with a special gala performance at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, as performers from different musical and dance styles feted the soon-to-be 18-year-old princess.
Accompanied by her parents, King Frederik and Queen Mary, and three siblings, Crown Prince Christian, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, the young princess sported a navy blue evening gown as she arrived to the historic theatre in the middle of Copenhagen.
The evening’s program included traditional musical elements, like The Royal Danish Opera performing the royal anthem ‘Kong Christian’ and operatic singer Louise McClelland Jacobsen performing ‘O mio babbino caro’ while also featuring modern fare from the world of Broadway, with song selections from West Side Story and Dear Evan Hansen.
Princess Isabella hinted at her personal taste, specifically requesting the pop trio Scarlet Pleasure after having seen them in concert when she was younger. As they prepared to sing ‘The Strip’, they turned to the princess, watching excitedly from the royal box, and said, “We heard it’s your favorite song.”
Princess Isabella was joined by 1,000 young people between the ages of 17 and 24 who’d entered a lottery to win tickets to the event.
Other members of Princess Isabella’s family who were there to celebrate her include grandmother Queen Margrethe, her cousins Count Nikolai and Count Felix, her great-aunts Queen-Anne Marie, Princess Benedikte, her cousin Prince Gustav of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and his wife Princess Carina; and from her maternal family, her aunts Jane Stephens and Patricia Bailey.
As she left the venue, reporters asked her how the evening went. She replied: “Fantastic!”
As Princess Isabella’s 18th birthday falls over the Easter holidays, her celebrations were held a week early. On 11 April, she and her family visited Aarhus City Hall for a birthday party that also hosted 100 young people within the community who’d won their tickets via lottery.
On her official birthday on 21 April, she will receive the Order of the Elephant, which she was automatically gifted when her father ascended the throne.
